YouTube's CEO is no longer Susan Wojcicki.
Susan Wojcicki is leaving her job as CEO of YouTube right away after nine years in the role. Neal Mohan, who has been the company's Chief Product Officer for the past seven years, will take over for her.
In a company blog post, she said, "I've decided to step down from my position as head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about." Wojcicki will now work as a consultant for Google and Alphabet as a whole.
In her post, Wojcicki praises Mohan for starting YouTube TV, which has been very successful, and for running YouTube Music, Premium, and Shorts. She also says that Mohan has been in charge of the company's Trust and Safety team, which will be even more important as "the promises of AI" become a possible growth area.
It's the end of an era for YouTube, which has had to deal with public scrutiny over how it handles hate speech, moderating content, and spreading false information while Wojcicki was in charge. When she joined the site in 2014, it had just reached one billion users, and "YouTubers" were still seen as strange. Now, there are 2.5 billion users of YouTube all over the world, and YouTube creators have turned their channels into full-time jobs.
Wojcicki is a friend of Google's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. She was one of Google's first employees and, in her own words, "managed marketing, co-created Google Image Search, led Google's first Video and Book search, as well as early parts of AdSense's creation, worked on the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, and served as SVP of Ads" before taking over YouTube.
